Day 153 - Reynolds Creek Campground / by Beth Whittington

Our moose friend (who I’m calling Sam) hung around all night - Nick even woke me up out of a deep sleep in the wee hours of the morning because he “heard something big”, which I’m pretty sure was just Sam.  Sam was still in camp this morning when Nick desperately had to use the privy.  Hahahaha

sound on - Nick cracks me up

It definitely feels like we are on vacation with these low mileage days.  We took our time again this morning and didn’t leave until 9.  With the relatively flat terrain, we made good time despite the overgrown trail, the long lunch break, and the smoke headaches we both have (sadly, the smoke haze is getting worse, not better).

With about 2 miles left before getting to Reynolds Creek Campground, the overgrown trail suddenly opened up and became a wide, well-used trail.  I knew instantly that we would be seeing lots of people, and, sure enough, around the next bend were tons of day hikers at the beautiful Virginia Creek waterfall.  Shortly after that we walked by St. Mary Falls, which was also gorgeous.  However, just like when we were in Yellowstone, we’re not used to being around so many people.  If we had come upon either site while we were alone in the wilderness, we would have hung out for a long time; however,  it felt too weird with so many people so we didn’t stay long.

We got to camp at 3pm - I don’t think we’ve been done this early on a non-town day since our first week on trail.  It’s awesome to be done so early but it also feels a little wrong.  I’m embracing it, though.  We are camping with a guy, John, who was in the backcountry office in West Glacier when we were getting our permits.  (I only remember him because he had been very excited about sitting next to a Furry on his train ride here and was showing everyone pictures.) He was great to talk to.

It is only 6:45 and I’m getting to bed!  Craziness!
